Atelier & Co. was asked to submit an alternate proposal for a new building adjacent to this magnificent Beaux-Arts synagogue on Central Park West and 70th Street. Founded in 1654, Congregation Shearith Israel was the first Jewish congregation established in North America.

The current design proposal ignores not only the architectural style of the synagogue, but also most of the surrounding buildings created in an array of traditional styles.

Inspired by several of Lutyen's city buildings and Warren & Wetmore's Steinway, the Atelier design proposal takes cues from some of these neighbors using a neo-Georgian vocabulary of brick and limestone to create a new lobby and functional space for the synagogue, as well as a private lobby for the residential condominiums above.
